1 killed, 1 injured in California collision

One person was killed and another was injured from an accident that happened in California on June 18. The multi-car crash occurred around 5 p.m. on South Bay Boulevard nearby Turri Road in Los Osos. The California Highway Patrol reported getting calls about a vehicle driving erratically through traffic before the collision happened. The incident was caused by a Dodge Charger sedan headed north on the southbound side of the road. The vehicle collided head-on with a teenager headed south in a Chevrolet Cavalier.

The impact of the collision sent the Charger rolling until it struck a Ford Ranger that pulled-off to the shoulder on the southbound side after the initial collision occurred. The driver in the Ford did not suffer any injuries. The driver in the Charger was brought to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center to receive treatment. Emergency response personnel pronounced the teenage driver dead at the scene.

A day after the incident occurred, the 22-year-old driver responsible for the crash was arrested and charged with manslaughter and suspicion of felony DUI. The victim had just graduated from high school two weeks prior to the auto accident.

A crash victim's family members may be entitled to receive restitution that could help with sudden funeral costs, medical expenses and loss of financial support and services. In some cases, the criminal charges levied against the at-fault driver may be cited as evidence to establish the defendant's negligence. If a defendant is found guilty for the death of an accident victim, the verdict may be of use in the proceedings of a civil trial.
